HOW TO STAY OUT OF A RUT
You are a new creation in Christ. His mercies are new every morning, so you can learn to experience something new about God everyday.
Trying something new is a great way to discover what you were made to do. Several years ago, I had a conversation with my wife about how I loved my occupation, but I was feeling stressed. I travel and minister around the World. I meet new people and experience new places. What’s not to love! However, even in the middle of all the constant change It seemed life was becoming routine and I felt in a rut.
I told her, when I come home I find myself overwhelmed with office work, managing people, and trying to be a good father and husband. I asked her how she thought I could manage all those things. Her response surprised me, “You should get a hobby, so you do something new and have some time alone, because you are always meeting the needs of people. You should buy a motorcycle.”
That new hobby taught me a few things about myself and God.
1. Trying something new allows you to discover something new about yourself, an undiscovered skill or untapped passion.
2. Trying something new gives you a new perspective on other people and the world.
3. Trying something new makes you aware of how you have fallen into patterns of sameness and smallness. Routines can lead to ruts.
Jesus didn’t come to make you a better version of the old you. He made you something brand new! The life Jesus came to give us was anything but routine. He came to give us a life of fullness!
How have you fallen into patterns of sameness and smallness?
What is one new thing could you try today?
